CHRISTMAS IN MEXICO – FELIZ NAVIDAD!
TEQUILA, TACOS, AND PIÑATAS?
There’s plenty of exciting holiday events in Canada and the US. But what about soaking up sunshine and celebrating Christmas in Mexico?
Think tequila, tacos, piñatas, and traditional festive elements. Skip the snow and add a little extra hot sauce, lime, and salt! Here are the creative ways we celebrate the holiday season here.
LAS POSADAS
Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration with a Mexican twist. From December 16th-24th, families recreate the travels of Mary and Joseph in search of lodging while pregnant with Jesus. You don’t have to know the whole nativity story or be religious to enjoy this celebration, because it’s all about celebrating family. From festive songs to colorful lanterns, piñatas and tasty treats, Las Posadas has something for everyone to enjoy.
CHRISTMAS EVE
Christmas Eve or “Noche Buena” is the final day of the Posadas after parades, songs, and food. Think of it as a rest before the big day. So, grab a warm cup of Ponche Navideño- a punch made from local fruits, cane sugar, and spices. Basically, it’s Mexico’s version of Eggnog, but with extra ponche.

CHRISTMAS DAY
Everyone’s favorite day of this celebration! Families and friends don their best church clothes to gather for the last hurrah. And while there’s no snow here, aromas of cooked turkey, chicken mole, beans, tamales, and more, fill the air. After all, who doesn’t love good, old-fashioned holiday themes?
