Yacht and Boat Rental Safety in Mexico: A Guest Checklist

Booking a private boat rental in Mexico starts with choosing the right operator, vessel and route. On an H2OH charter, your captain and crew operate the yacht. Your job as a guest is to share your group’s needs, understand the briefing and follow the crew’s instructions throughout the trip.

This checklist is for a crewed Riviera Maya charter. It helps guests staying in Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos prepare for boarding at Puerto Aventuras Marina.

Before booking: match the yacht to your whole group

Give the team the total number of adults and children, including infants. A yacht’s maximum capacity is different from the number of guests included in its base price. Ask about the layout, shaded seating, boarding steps and access to the bathroom, especially if anyone needs assistance. Explain mobility needs before choosing a vessel; a photograph cannot establish whether a particular yacht will suit your group.

Tell the operator about children’s ages and ask about suitable life jackets. Mexico’s Secretaría de Marina’s visitor guidance stresses avoiding overloaded boats and using a life jacket appropriate to the activity and the individual.

At boarding: listen before the celebration starts

• Find out where life jackets are kept and ask the crew to help with fit.
• Listen to instructions for moving around the yacht, boarding ladders and permitted deck areas.
• Agree who will actively supervise each child; having a crew does not replace that responsibility.
• Ask how to alert the crew if someone feels unwell, needs assistance or is missing from the group.
• Follow yacht rules for footwear, belongings, drinks and use of marine toilets.

Raise concerns before departure. Guests should not test engines, inspect propellers, handle navigation equipment or attempt repairs. Those tasks belong to the operator and crew.

Swimming and snorkeling are separate decisions

Enter the water only when the captain permits it and follow the designated entry and return procedure. Tell the crew your swimming ability, use the equipment they require and stay within the area they specify. Never pressure someone to swim; remaining aboard is a valid choice. Avoid alcohol before swimming and snorkeling.

A three-hour Xpu-Ha trip focuses on coastal cruising and swimming when conditions allow. A four-hour InHa charter offers snorkeling on its eligible route. The two-hour sunset cruise is an evening coastal experience. None promises a particular animal encounter, clear water or unrestricted access to every bay.

Weather and the captain’s decision

The captain determines the route and water stops for conditions on the day. A sunny hotel forecast does not establish sea conditions. Keep an eye on communications from your operator and follow port restrictions; do not arrange an alternative departure to bypass a closure.

Read the booking, weather and conduct policies before paying. Ask the team to explain any uncertainty about changes or cancellations for your specific reservation.

Plan the journey as carefully as the yacht day
