Yacht Charter Safety: Questions to Ask Before You Board

Ask safety questions before choosing a yacht, not only when you arrive at the dock. The useful answers concern the named vessel, your passengers and the activity you want to do. A photograph, private booking or reassuring description cannot establish that a particular trip is suitable for everyone.

This is a passenger-planning checklist, not an inspection certificate or a replacement for the captain’s briefing. All H2OH charters depart from Puerto Aventuras Marina.

Before booking: discuss the people coming

Give the team the full passenger count, including infants, and children’s ages. Explain any assistance needed for boarding, stairs, moving around the yacht or getting back aboard after swimming. Ask about seating, shade and bathroom access on the particular vessel rather than relying on the fleet’s largest yacht.

Discuss swimming experience honestly. Snorkeling, swimming and a high-dive platform are different activities; one person’s comfort with a pool does not establish suitability for every sea activity. Staying aboard is an option to plan for, not a failure to participate.

Ask about the crew and equipment

Ask the operator for clarification or relevant documentation when needed. Do not treat this checklist as proof that a particular license, inspection, certification or item of equipment has been verified.

At boarding: give the briefing your attention

Arrive 20 minutes before departure, following any additional instructions in your confirmation. H2OH’s company rules set out check-in and guest conduct. Tell the crew about a practical concern before the yacht leaves rather than assuming it can be resolved underway.

Ask the crew to show you the life jacket appropriate for you, when to wear it, permitted guest areas and the way to raise an alarm. Listen before music, photographs or celebration activities begin. Move carefully, use available handholds and keep bags out of access routes.

During water activities: keep supervision explicit

The American Red Cross swimming guidance calls for close, constant adult attention to children, even in shallow water or with a lifeguard present. It also explains that flotation toys and life jackets do not replace supervision. Agree which accompanying adult is watching each child, without distractions.

Follow the crew’s decisions about entering the water, boundaries, equipment and returning aboard. Do not swim alone, jump from an undesignated place or use a high-dive platform without the crew’s permission and instructions. Let the crew know promptly if someone feels unwell, anxious or unable to continue an activity.

Weather decisions and refund terms are separate

A sheltered marina or a favorable forecast is not a guarantee of conditions along the route. Do not choose a month or a morning departure on an assurance of calm water. The captain determines what is appropriate on the day.

Read the applicable cancellation and weather policy before payment. An operating decision, a guest’s request to return and a qualifying cancellation can have different consequences. Ask the team to resolve questions about your booking; a blog should not promise a refund outside those terms.

Prepare the right request

Compare Family Charter options or reef-snorkeling itineraries according to the actual group. A package name is not a universal safety or child-suitability rating.

Prepare an estimate for a suitable yacht and send the team any essential participation or access questions before reserving. Keep the answers with your confirmation and follow the crew’s instructions throughout the outing.
